Robert De Niro Welcomes A Baby Girl

by on Dec.27, 2011, under Uncategorized

Actor Robert De Niro is a dad again at age 68. Yep he and his wife announced they have welcomed a baby girl. Via a surrogate, Robert De Niro and wife actress/singer Grace Hightower 56 years old, are now the proud parents of a baby girl, Helen Grace Hightower. Their new daughter joins big brother Eliot who is 13 years old. The little girl is apparently doing just fine. She weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds and 2 ounces. Robert and Grace have been married since 1997, however they separated in 1999 but their divorce was never finalized. In 2004 the couple renewed their vows and have been happily married since then. Little Helen is the sixth child for the Academy Award winning actor who has four other children. He has a son Raphael from his first marriage to Diahnne Abbott. Robert also adopted Diahnne?s daughter Drena from a previous relationship. Then there are his 16-year old twin boys Julian and Henry from his relationship with Toukie Smith. Well it certainly seems that De Niro and his family have even more reason to celebrate this holiday season with the addition of their new baby girl. What a great Christmas [...]

The Oscar nominations don’t officially drop until January 24, but the short list for the Best Original Song has been released. On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 39 songs vying for the big prize at the Academy Awards next year.

Two of Elton John’s “Gnomeo & Juliet” tracks — including his Lady Gaga duet, “Hello Hello” — made the list, along with multiple tracks from “The Muppets.” will.i.am‘s “Rio” track, “Hot Wings,” Mary J. Blige’s “The Living Proof” from “The Help,” and Zooey Deschanel’s “Winnie the Pooh” track, “So Long,” are all in the running.

More alternative fare like songs from “Machine Gun Preacher” (Chris Cornell, “The Keeper”), “We Bought a Zoo” (Sigur Rós’ Júnsi, “Gathering Stories”) and “Win Win” (the National, “Think You Can Wait”) have also made the preliminary cut.

Noticeably absent from the list is Madonna, who contributed the track “Masterpiece” to her directorial effort, “W.E.” Reuters reports that the song, which is up for a Golden Globe, does not qualify because it’s placed a minute and a half into the end credits and not as “the first music cue,” per Academy rules.

The songs will be narrowed from 39 when voters are sent three-minute clips or view the tracks at special Academy screenings and score the songs. To be eligible for the nod, the song must be scored a minimum 8.25 on a scale of six to 10. The show is slated to take place February 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

Pet Tags

by on Dec.27, 2011, under Uncategorized

Man, I’m so irritated.

I just received four pets tags that I ordered for Bev and Mary Margaret (two for Brooklyn and two for LA) and they’re all messed up. Not only did they leave off the “Margaret” on Mary Margaret’s tags, but the text isn’t centered correctly and runs off the right side on all four of them. (The last letter of the address is cut in half.) The tags themselves are also ugly. The edges aren’t smoothed out… they look like someone just cut them from a piece of sheet metal and called it a day.

So anyway, I got them this morning on my way to Starbucks (yesterday’s mail), so while I was there, I started drafting a strongly-worded letter in my head, like what I was going to say to these people when I sent them back.

And then I saw it.

In tiny print on the bottom of the invoice it said, “Our handicapped employees appreciate your order.”

So now I can’t send them back. If I did I’d be a total asshole.

I’m just going to order new ones from someplace else. Any recommendations?

‘Prometheus’ Trailer: Five Key Elements

by on Dec.26, 2011, under Uncategorized

Ridley Scott’s teaser, featuring Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron fighting for their lives, is reminiscent of ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner.’

If you’re a fan of movie trailers, consider your holiday wants and wishes fulfilled now that the teaser for Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” has dropped. It’s the fourth trailer released this week for a hugely anticipated 2012 film, following “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Wrath of the Titans” and “The Hobbit.” Here’s a look at five key elements that deserve MTV News’ over-analysis:

Plot Tease
We still don’t know a lot about the story line in this film, but this one-minute spot sheds a lot of light on what the action will center around: a team of explorers, scientists and anthropologists sets out on a journey to find clues to the origin of our species. “What they found could be our end,” we’re told in cold, blue type, before quick cuts of what looks to be death and destruction. And although the prequel rumors have been shot down by those involved, there is room here to interpret it as such. Not to mention the title: In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the titan who stole fire from Mt. Olympus and gave it to humans. If the humans in the film are searching for their origin, maybe it is Prometheus, in some way, shape or form.

Lost in Space/Discovery of Life on Other Planets
Unsurprisingly, there are several gorgeous shots of space vehicles, spaceships, spacesuits, etc. that help properly accentuate the size and scope of what it would be like to be up/out there, as well as how big this film really is. Director Ridley Scott shot the film in 3-D and serves up a few hints to the beautiful technology at play, though there is still a grittiness to it all. This is not friendly, bright and shiny unexplored territory; it’s dark, dangerous, deep space. And then there are the scenes at the end of the trailer that look to take place on another planet, in another galaxy. There is dry, dusty terrain and ancient-looking symbols, a towering horseshoe-shaped totem of some sort, that looks to be either crumbling to the ground, or it is moving of its own accord, beginning a small war between the natives and the humans who’ve discovered them.

The New Ripley(s)
It’s hard to talk about Ridley Scott and an “Alien”-esque movie without thinking about Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, one of the most bad-ass protagonists in film history. There’s no replacing Ripley, but Scott has enlisted two very capable ladies to carry the torch: Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron. From what the trailer shows, both women will be fighting for their lives, but Rapace seems to be the most Ripley-esque, particularly in one shot where she is hanging upside down, being held by someone or something. The resemblance is uncanny. And let’s not forget about the rest of the cast, of whom we get only brief glimpses: Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Rafe Spall.

That Ridley Scott Touch
The trailer is cold, calculated and just too cool. Just like Scott has said himself, if “Prometheus” isn’t an “Alien” prequel, the two films definitely share the same DNA — not to mention a few “Blade Runner”-esque elements thrown in for good measure. And as is the case with most of Scott’s films, the effects are far more practical than CG. The world of “Prometheus” is set in a distant future, but not too distant. It’s big, bold and, very likely, terrifying.

The Alien(s)
As much as we might have hoped to see some big, bad aliens in this trailer, all we get are hints of an unidentified, menacing force out there. In one brief scene, the team happens upon an area full of small, perfectly arranged casings that could be artifacts or alien eggs, we don’t know. But we do see one of the humans’ helmets enveloped by a mysterious gas, followed by a loud, painful scream. There is a quick shot of the head of something being examined in a lab, what looks like it might be an alien ship of some sort hovering over dusty terrain, followed by brief shots of human suffering at the hands of something we can’t quite make out. Yet.

“Prometheus” hits theaters June 8, 2012.

‘Hobbit’ Trailer Goes Back To Middle-earth

by on Dec.26, 2011, under Uncategorized

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ teaser features Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett and other ‘Lord of the Rings’ characters.

What a week of 2012 movie trailers and teasers! We’ve had looks at “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Wrath of the Titans,” and now, the first official trailer for Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” part one of his two-film treatment of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book.

The trailer opens with an elderly Bilbo (Ian Holm) explaining to Frodo (Elijah Wood) that he might not have shared all there was to know about his adventures, followed by a quick cut to young Bilbo (Martin Freeman) being recruited to come on a new journey with Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen). It then introduces a slew of Dwarves and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), who begin an eerie foreshadowing chant that provides backing for quick clips of this new fellowship on their journey. After that, it shows brief glimpses of Cate Blanchett reprising her role as ethereal Galadriel and a shadowy appearance of Andy Serkis as Gollum muttering about his “precious.”

While “The Hobbit” is a return to Tolkien’s famous Middle-earth for Jackson, whose critically acclaimed “Lord of the Rings” trilogy won millions of fans around the world and 17 Oscars, this film has a slightly different tone and look to it.

“The Hobbit” takes place 60 years before the events that unfold in “The Fellowship of the Ring” and follows Bilbo Baggins’ journey to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the treacherous dragon Smaug. Along the way, Bilbo and the brave warrior Thorin Oakenshield have run-ins with Goblins, Orcs, Wargs and giant spiders — and a chance meeting with Gollum that will change the course of Bilbo’s life forever and leads to the discovery of the “one ring to rule them all.”

Much to the delight of the “Lord of the Rings” dedicated fanbase, many of the actors from Jackson’s first three films are reprising their roles: Andy Serkis is back as Gollum, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Hugo Weaving as Elrond and Christopher Lee as Saruman.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is set to arrive in theaters December 14, 2012.

Little Monsters saw how Lady Gaga celebrates Thanksgiving during her lavish TV special, and now we know where Mother Monster will spend the holiday season.

“Well I’ll be in Japan right up until Christmas day,” Gaga told MTV News earlier this month. “So I’ll be eating with all my Japanese Little Monsters. I like shabu shabu [a form of Japanese hot pot].”

On Tuesday (December 20), the singer tweeted about her trip there. “Just arrived in Tokyo!” she wrote, including a photo of herself sitting in her hotel room. “So happy to see my Kawaii Monsters! #SleepyGaga bedtime. I’m a professional napper today.”

She kicked off the gifting season with her holiday-themed pop-up store and window display, Gaga’s Workshop, at Barneys New York. She and stylist Nicola Formichetti gave fans an idea of what the pop star would want from Santa with Mother Monster-inspired products like head-shaped candles, leather jackets, her favorite books and chocolates shaped like shoes.

The singer is expected to land Stateside on December 31, just in time for the 40th annual “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.”. She’s one of the many acts lined up for the event, including Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, LMFAO and Florence and the Machine. The show will be anchored by “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest, with help from Fergie and Jenny McCarthy.

The busy holiday season caps off an even busier year for Lady Gaga, who happened to be MTV News’ Top Newsmaker of 2011. She tirelessly released singles, videos, personas, a chart-topping album (Born This Way) and scooped up awards at seemingly every show from the Grammys to the VMAs. She was also our #5 Best Artist of 2011, and her disco empowerment track, “Born This Way,” boasted the #5 spot on the Best Songs of 2011 list as well.

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.
